You can certainly hear the strong 50's and 60's pop music influences in the quirky ballads and melodic musings of Jeremy Jay. But there's a surreal floating sensation brought on by Jay's melancholic vocal style that makes it teeter between psychedelia and 80s moody synth bands. Very groovy indeed, sir. Don't miss Jeremy Jay's show tonight at Emo's on the inside stage, 603 Red River. Opening the show is Nic Armstrong (and his mustache), followed by the ever fantastic {{{SUNSET}}}. It's a great line-up this evening, and a perfect way to start off a long weekend. Go!

There's a note from late this morning indicating that Democratic Senate candidate Rick Noriega apparently supports lifting the offshore oil drilling ban. But the Noriega campaign is reportedly claiming that his support is not the same as the support that Republican incumbent John Cornyn or President Bush have for the same idea. (I defy anyone to diagram that sentence!)
Working the margins: Quorum Report.com expresses some skepticism about whether Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst will put the Margins Tax back on the table. But the analysis about the entire episode surrounding the tax is very thought-provoking.
Karl Rove, The Next Generation: The Dallas Morning News' Wayne Slater connects the dots to many of the former top Bush advisor's proteges at work on various campaigns, from John McCain to John Cornyn. Perhaps, at the end of the day, we are all Karl Rove.

The fallout over Sen. John Cornyn's vote on the Medicare bill has provided Democrats and the American Medical Association with enough red meat for a decent 4th of July barbecue.
A reported $100,000 donation to the Republican Governors' Association by the head of Pilgrim's Pride has some on the left crying "fowl"--er, "foul!" (Sorry.) The RGA is currently chaired by Gov. Rick Perry, and according to Capitol Annex, the contribution came days after Perry met with the head of the poultry giant. That was about a month before Perry asked for a waiver on federal corn-based ethanol production mandates.
Some in the conservative ranks of Texas have noticed a change in Sen. Barack Obama in the month since he became the presumptive Democratic nominee for President. How much of it is "running to the middle" and how much of it is Sen. Obama displaying his true colors will be grist for the mill until convention time in less than two months.
"Oh!" from New York-based pop up-and-comer, Eric Hutchinson. Eric was nice enough to drop by KUT to record this tune just a couple of weeks ago. It appears on his current album, Sounds Like This.

Seattle band Fleet Foxes relies more on instinct than anything else in their songwriting. If it flows, perfect. Then they take vocal harmonies to a whole new level. Frankly, it's gorgeous music. Meanwhile, the band continues to evolve, exploring music from around the world and giving the indie vibe a sort of folk-revival feel to it. Fleet Foxes is headlining tonight at The Mohawk, 912 Red River. The bill includes The Dutchess and The Duke, and Balmorhea.

As we approach the 232nd anniversary of America's Declaration of Independence this Friday, here's a thought from Live Science. While the Declaration was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 2, 1776, "Happy Second of July" just doesn't have the same ring. The G.I. Bill may be a done deal, but we probably haven't heard the last of the rhetoric surrounding the legislation. John Cornyn and Rick Noriega have sniped at each other about it all spring. The Dallas Morning News asks whether this is a small-scale copy of the McCain-Obama race, in terms of how to support veterans after their service to the Nation. Lawyers calling for blood: Williamson County D.A. John Bradley's reminder about blood draws from DWI suspects prompts a thought from Grits For Breakfast via the blog Eye On Williamson.
"Belle Streets Midnight" from local singer/songwriter, Chris Brecht. Chris and his band dropped by KUT to record this tune back in the summer of '07. It appears on Brecht's new album, The Great Ride, which hit record stores in May.
